 Happy New Rotary Year!

Bonnie McFarland, Vice President; Dan Whiteley, Director; Paul Koch, Director; Debbie Saunders, Director;
Kurt Dailey, Director, and Jim Morrison, Immediate Past President
Tuesday, July 1, 2008
President Deb Rhodes officially took the reins of the Gallipolis Rotary club on this first day of the new Rotary year.  Cleeland Willis offered thePresident Debbie with the Rotary Rose. invocation.  We had a visiting Rotarian this morning, Bill Knight, from the Point Pleasant Rotary club.

Secretary Chuck Clark presented our new president with a small bouquet of flowers from the garden including the rose called Rotary!  Chuck said he has been hard at work trying to cultivate this rose for a number of years and the weather this year has produced an excellent rose so he just had to share!

Rotary Mile--President Debbie reminded everyone that Friday, July 4th, is the first project of the year, the Rotary Mile which runs just before the annual 4th of July parade.  We need Rotarians to arrive at the Shake Shoppe at 5:30 pm to help with the registration and a number of Rotarians to help at the finish line to hand out water and collect the runners for the trophy presentations and a group picture before the parade arrives.  It's always a challenge!

Bonnie's coin boxFoundation Coin Box--Bonnie McFarland's record for a Rotary coin box is still safe as Bonnie turned in a stuffed coin box full of quarters for the Rotary Foundation.  This box was stuffed and had tape around it just to keep the box together.  Bonnie has certainly provided an excellent model for future giving and a challenge to other club members. 'Way to go, Bonnie!'
This is an excellent to make your annual contribution to the Rotary Foundation.  Remember, Every Rotarian, Every Year!

Split-The-Pot--Past President Jim Morrison ran STP for the meeting and the winning ticket was held by Cleeland Willis who pocketed the $6 small pot. Jim asked for a suitable drum roll as Cleeland drew for the big pot of $327 from the remaining 10 cards.  Cleeland drew the Queen of and won the big one!  Cleeland immediately donated $100 of his winnings to the Rotary Foundation!  The Foundation fine was assessed against anyone who did NOT win split the pot today.

Fellowship--Lou Ellen Werry ran club fellowship for the meeting and collected fines from latecomers and for any missing pins or badges.  Jim Morrison offered a Happy Buck for the fact he was wearing his Past President's pin today.  Lou Ellen concluded with some 'Guess that comedian' trivia.

New Member Induction--Our club inducted a new member today, DavidDave Nadler with Jim Morrison Nadler, from the Ohio Valley Bank into our club.  Past President Jim skillfully led the induction ceremony by introducing our inductee to the Object of Rotary.  Next, Dan Whiteley introduced the 4-Way, and finally Dave's sponsor, Katrinka Hart, presented the Rotary pin and badge to our candidate. Jim also presented the club's history book to David to complete his induction to Gallipolis Rotary.

Program--Our program for the morning was a vocational talk by our newly installed member, Dave Nadler who was introduced by President Deb.  The vocational talk is the opportunity for members to share some of their life experiences with the club and where the fines are suspended so the speaker may talk about his/her business.  The club learned that Dave earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin in Mathematics. Dave was planning on pursuing a PhD at the University of Kentucky, but diverted to follow a dream to train at the Olympic training camp in Judo. During his stay Dave purchased a Pizza restaurant and opened a second store built up a loyal customer base and finally sold the business to relocate with his growing family to Wellston.  He received an MBA from OU and joined the Ohio Valley Bank in Gallipolis.  For the past five years he works as a credit analyst examining the large borrowing at the bank as well as working on special projects.

During the Q & A period, members pulled some interesting  information about one of David's hobbies, bike riding.  When the weather is cooperative, Dave rides his bike from Wellston to Gallipolis, two or more days a week. His route takes him through Wilkesville to Vinton and down 160 to Gallipolis. He is not convinced that biking actually saves much money due to the equipment and the wear and tear on the bike, but it is great for fitness.  OurPresident Deb and Dave Nadler newest member to Gallipolis Rotary is a strong testimony that one should follow his dreams, and that you can achieve what you set your mind to accomplish.  Thanks for the great talk, Dave, and welcome to Rotary!

President Deb presented a Rotary mug to our speaker and reminded everyone to plan on helping with the 61st annual Rotary Mile this Friday.  We will meet at the Shake Shoppe at 5:30 pm.
